Native Plantings - Red River

After learning about the shoreline restoration project completed at Tilleda Falls in 2023, a landowner along the Red River reached out to us with interest in improving his own property. His shoreline had long been bare and difficult to manage, with exposed soil vulnerable to washing into the river during rain events and seasonal water fluctuations. In addition to preventing erosion, the landowner hoped to create a shoreline that felt more natural and visually appealing, as very little vegetation had successfully established there over the years.

The site presented unique challenges, including heavy shade, rocky soils, and an established tree canopy that limited sunlight and moisture retention. To ensure long-term success, we selected hardy native species well suited for dry, shaded environments. These plants were carefully chosen to stabilize the soil while thriving under the existing conditions rather than working against them. By the time planting was complete, the transformation was striking—the once bare shoreline had taken on new life, creating a healthier buffer along the river and a landscape that blended beautifully with the surrounding woods.

The plantings included some of our favorites, including Zigzag Goldenrod, Mountain Mint, and Purple Lovegrass.
