Live Water Quality Monitoring

Lake Sturgeon Spawning Monitoring & Education

Every year thousands of Lake Sturgeon move from Lake Winnebago up the Wolf River as far as the Shawano Dam to spawn. These sturgeon are important to the Winnebago ecosystem, the Menominee tribal people, spear fishermen, and tourists who enjoy viewing the spawning events. This population also provides a large contribution of stocked sturgeon to other rivers and lakes around the United States and even the world.

But why are some spawning grounds used but not others?

WAMSCO has deployed a continuous water quality monitoring buoy that will measure water quality paramenters and aid in:

  • Identifying differences between preferred spawning areas vs. areas no longer used for spawning

  • Identifying areas for potential shoreline habitat restoration

  • Community education and involvement on the importance of aquatic habitat and quality

  • Sharing data throughout the U.S. and the world where Lake Sturgeon are being reintroduced for replication of spawning habitat.
